Washington, D. C.
19th May 1863.
I have just bespoken with the Commissioner of Public Buildings for our friend Mount that he may have the painting of the eastern stair-case of the Senate Chamber to represent Washington's descent of the Alleghany as described by himself. See page 10 of the first Note to Marshall's Life. Th. Commissioner approves of the suggestion and will use his best efforts to get an appropriation; but wishes me to make the suggestion to him in writing, before doing which I thought I would communicate with Mr. Mount.
It is a subject which I believe has never yet been attempted; and which Mount would be pleased to execute inspired by Homer's description o Achilles in the Scamander Aeschines letter, if he is the author, proves his appreciation of poetry.
Where is Mount? Can you give me his address, or please show him this note and oblige
Your friend and
JOHN M. GARDNER
I might have written to your son Aaron without troubling you, only suppose you to be more likely informed.
Mr. Martin E. Thompson,
