My dear daisy
I am not going to excuse myself - am too old a sinner for that - But in justice to you must acknowledge to having left undone those things which I ought to have done "too much - and there is no health in me since I had the Grippe" which came upon me at the very time I rec'd that very pretty Cat's eye pin you sent me for good luck. Perhaps if it had reached me just as it did; it might have been all the worse for me. At all events I was pretty near death's door at that time, and have not been right well since. It will be just three years Mar 17 next since Mr. Searing died and since that time I have been over loaded with care and responsibility - care indoors and out - for Mrs. Searing has been a an invalid since before the death of her husband, and her daughters are both married and away the burden of household affairs devolves upon me. I was much pleased to meet Miss Wade at Stony Brook. Although I saw her but a short time. She coming

the day before I had to leave. I hope she enjoyed her visit at S.B. It was my first visit for three years. I hope it will not be so long before I make another for as we grow older the places of our youth seem nearer to us. Tell your "Pa" there has been nothing done with "Equalizing" yet. I expect that Tom wants to buy it. I am willing so far as I am concerned I told him to sell your father's part 1/6 of it, and mine 1/6 and sent to your father the proceeds, as he wanted it. But he has not done anything with it yet! I expect he is very full of politics just now as he has the nomination for Surrogate Judge on the Democratic ticket. I hope he will be elected, but the chances are against him for it is a Republican county. It is with much difficulty that I write. You will please excuse me from not writing any more, if I write oftener my hand is very unsteady, but not from "hard drink" don't know whether it is from old age or nervousness - but it is so.
Love to your Pa & Ma
Affectionately,
Uncle John
