Dear Uncle,
I am trying very hard for an appointment as 2d Lieutenant in one of those Cavalry Regiments proposed to be raised: Congress is now deliberating upon the Bill.~ I have written to Robert Schenk on the subject. I have been informed by eminent person here that he can get the situation it he tries, he. being an intimate friend of the Secy. of War. Now if you will urge him to exert himself on my behalf, by writing him a strong letter in my favor, you will brighten my prospects very much. I have just written to Capt. James Schenk to stir him up.-I apply myself very closely to painting, and have succeeded thus far, beyond, my expectations. Please remember me to all at home, and tell some body to write-
Yours truly-
