"My dear Sir-
-"Your letter of Sept 1st I have received-I like the tone of it-The good feeling manifested-I am ready to negociate with you - if you will state the time-when and where-I can meet you. I will undertake those large heads for you-although I have been urged not to paint any more such subjects.
I had as leave paint the characters of some Negros-as to paint the characters of some Whites-as far Morality is concerned.
A Negro is as good as a White man-as long as he behaves himself.
