Charles Lanman Esq.
My dear Sir,
Last week I had the pleasure to see Mr. Vanderline- he is a painter of eminence and deserves encouragement from his native state & the world.
I am pleased he is engaged painting a whole e length portrait of Gen Taylor for the Common Council of New York - They should do themselves honor by giving him one thousand dollars for the painting - but instead of that sum they only grant the author of Caius Marins - five hundred dollars - So I hear. I hope you will pay Mr. Vanderline every attention and raise your pen in his favor.
Lanman, if you write Vanderline's biography - it would immortalize you. He is a man of close observations and is rich in materials. He is just the man for you, if you have the genius to gain his affections. I will take one copy
