Scope & Content To Little Bobbie

I hear your voice my happy boy,
Pipe up your notes of tuneful joy,
You will find the world a broken toy
Too soon.

Sing on while breaks the morning light,
Tis well, to you the earth looks bright,
Your song may keep your country's blight
From view

And then again when you go to rest
Be your song of Heaven where dwells the bless'd,
You have dear ones there whose lips have press'd
Your brow

Be thankful and remember those
Whose arms of friendship round you close,
And strive to show that you have chose
The good

Little Josie's name you hear,
To yearning hearts and memory dear,
How sad the trials of the year
Just gone

We too at length will have to die,
With others long forgotten,
And while I write it may be nigh
To you.

That mirthful laugh again of joy
I would not check my darling boy,
Yet strange if life hath no alloy
For you.
