My dear Sir,
Since my return from Europe my time has been so much engaged in fitting up my new place, that I could not do justice to my friends and I hope you will excuse me if I have not written to you sooner. Allow me before all things to wish to yourself and to your friends at Stony Brook a happy new year and may you find time to paint many more pictures. This reminds me to ask you how soon you will let me have the paintings ordered so that we might make a beginning which I have no doubt will prove advantageous to us both. You will be pleased to learn that my darling wife presented me on the 19th of December with a pretty little daughter and that both, mother and child are doing well.
I hope to see you soon in our City, at all events please drop me a line as soon as convenient.
Remember me to all the good friends at Stony Brook and believe me dear sir,
Yours ever truly
