My dear friend,
I duly appreciate the compliment you bestow in inviting me to address your citizens, but my engagements are such that 1 am compelled to decline. At no place in our county would I more gladly appear than at Setauket: and to no request would I make a prompter response than your own. Up to the day of election, I am engaged every evening-sunday excepted-to address the people upon the question of the canvass. Had I received your missive a week earlier, I would have foregone some one of my present engagements and done myself the honor of an appearance before the good people of your village.
Again thanking you for your kind invitation and repeating my regrets for my inability to comply. I am,
Truly Yours,
John R. Reid
