He certainly paid me a high compliment to hint or bespeak with the commissioner of Public Buildings (about a commission) for me to paint `Washington's descent of the Alleghany.
-"It is gatefying, that I have this opportunity to thank you for the many favors & kind words you have spoken. in my behalf, from time to time. As regards orders.-I hope if I should ever be called to paint a picture for the Government, that I could have the pleasure of selecting the subject; or to choose out of a number of subjects.
