Scope & Content Life
Life is not the thing I fancied
In my childhood it would be;
Not the endless witching playground
My hopeful dreamings promised me.

Enchantment then hung over all,
And gave the future kind embrace;
Whose visions kept my longing heart
Forever anxious for the race

Now I sigh o'er pleasures ended
Joys departed come no more;
Earthly hopes like chasing billows,
Perish on a barren shore

Once the bow of promise placed me
Above its spinning arch awhile;
Again the visions of my boyhood
Made all beneath me dark and vile.

Ephemeral as my footing there,
Those strange emotions of delight;
But I am now of earth again'
That tells me only of the night

When Till the appointed time I shall come
To move this plodding sphere;
The glory of that upper life
May teach me why I suffer here.

To move beyond this plodding ___
No vague conjectures will resolve the mysteries hidden here*

On reverse in pencil
And here I sigh o'er pleasures ended
Unknown to all to me-no more
And hope alas! Like broken billows
Runs lee _to the barren shore
