Silk embroidered sampler on linen. Border of stylized floral foliate pattern. Top half of work is scene of a horse with trees and a garden, with bird flying and swans swimming, and a small girl (with painted silk face) seated beside a bird cage, holding a bird.
Between the picture at the top and the alphabets is a cartouche which looks somewhat like a laurel wreath, inside of which is stitched: "Elizabeth Hempstead Elliot / Aged 9 years / Sag Harbor . Sept. 16th / 1824 / A.E.W. Tutoress/"
